4 OPINIONS: The Nunes Memo and NJ-3 Tom MacArthur’s response

ABOVE: Tom MacArthur’s statement on the memo’s release.

Editor’s note: The following four letters all regard the unredacted release of the Devin Nunes Memo. Three of the four are critical of the response of NJ-03’s Republican representative, Tom MacArthur. Here is the full text and an analysis of the memo.

Letter 1/4: Tom MacArthur: Do the right thing

A letter to the editor by Jackie Lynch of Waretown, NJ

Congressman Tom MacArthur recently posted what I found to be a very weak statement regarding the release of the Devin Nunes Memo. I wanted to share what I wrote to the Congressman.

I sincerely hope you share my OUTRAGE that the president of our country has declared war on the institution that has played an important role in our democracy ensuring a balance of power within the branches of government.

Why is the president going after his own department of justice? How can you stand by and watch our democracy disintegrate?

His hatred for the FBI is another issue. He is singlehandedly denigrating what used to be considered the rule of law!

Please speak out against this onslaught of our institutions otherwise I believe you will be complicit in helping to bring about the end of the democracy enjoyed by our citizens for hundreds of years.

Do the right thing!

Letter 2/4: TREASON?

A letter to the editor by Marianne P. Clemente, Chair, Barnegat Democratic Municipal Committee, Barnegat

Every morning I wake up with a sense of dread. What has that man in OUR Oval Office done now? My stomach churns as I listen to his latest shenanigans.

Well this time, he’s crossed the line. By deciding to declassify the FISA email memo, this President should certainly be brought up on charges of treason. I don’t use that word lightly, but in this case it is certainly appropriate, not only for Trump, but for all the Republican representatives and senators who stand behind this decision.

This email isn’t even an official document….it’s an interpretation of the FISA application by a Trump stooge. National security is at stake, and we cannot tolerate this gross negligence. All of our intelligence agencies have advised against the release of this email and state that because it is written out of context, it doesn’t reflect the truth. People need to see this for what it is….a means of distracting and discrediting the Russia investigation.
.
I have used the word treason before. Over the last 7 years, the Republican majority in Congress have refused to do their job…..a job we elected them to do, a job we are paying them to do and a job which must be done for the benefit of WE THE PEOPLE. For this refusal to do the business of the country, I felt that these members too should be charged with treason.

However, that act, pales in comparison to what Trump and his Republican cohorts have managed to do with the release of this email memo. I say – Charge them all with Treason.

Letter 3/4: TomMacArthur’s “lukewarm, noncommittal” response to the Nunes Memo

A letter to the editor by Rosemary L’Erario of Eastampton

Once again, Congressman MacArthur has issued a lukewarm, noncommittal statement, trying to straddle that fence he’s on when he speaks publicly, in response to the release of the “Nunes Memo.” He first says that the allegations should not be used to “impugn” the FBI. But then, seemingly justifies and validates its release by pointing to ‘allegations of ….American citizen’s rights being curtailed.’. Congressman MacArthur seems unwilling to voice any solid opinion on such a critical issue, one that could seriously compromise our national security in the name of Republican ambition.

The memo claims that the October 2016 warrant against Mr. Page was essentially political targeting, because of the approval process, and that somehow, this proves the Russia investigation itself is biased. How anyone can glean that the October warrant violated Mr. Page’s rights after he had been under surveillance since the summer of 2014 relating to repeated contacts with Russian operatives, is inconceivable.

But even worse is that our own Representatives in Congress have signed on to derail the Russia investigation, protect a complicit administration who, at the very least, refuses to enforce sanctions for election tampering, with no thought of protecting any future elections. They have sold out democracy, and Tom MacArthur is all in. It’s time to choose a side, Congressman. Party or Country? Which will it be?

Letter 4/4: Nunes Memo was altered and presented with no underlying evidence for context

A letter to the editor by Heather Larson of Mount Holly

Dear Editor,

This letter is in response to the statement about the release of the Devin Nunes Memo made on the official website of my Congressman Tom MacArthur.
The Congressman should realize and admit the information included in the memo has been altered. Therefore, the information is not valid. You should have taken a stand on that!

This action has already impugned people at the FBI just by creating a false summary and then making it public. If anyone has any doubt, why would they have altered it after the vote was taken to release it? Why wouldn’t they release all the underlying materials if they really wanted people to know the truth? The Republicans in the committee and in congress are creating a story they want people to believe. They are lying!

The abuse of government? The only abuse going on is members of congress interfering in an investigation of the President of the United States. Carter Page’s rights were not curtailed. He had questionable interactions with Russian officials. The FISA warrant was justified. We know that Congressman Nunez and other members of congress have made this a distraction. Congressman Nunez has no business being head of the Congressional Intelligence Committee when he clearly is serving the President directly and not the American people.

They are making our national defense insecure.  We can see Russia IN the White House! What is sad is that we are watching so many of you take the coward way and not say what this really is—a constitutional crisis destroying our foundation.
