OPINION: Our Congressman Andy Kim empathizes with small business owners

A letter to the editor by Laura Beverage of Medford, NJ

My husband and I started our family broadcast engineering consulting firm over 40 years ago. Not once in all of that time have we needed to secure a business loan in order to continue to pay both our employees, subcontractors, vendors and ourselves, due to an economic downturn. This even includes the 2008/2009 recession.

The COVID-19 health crisis and pandemic has devastated small firms like ours, with income understandably decreasing due to associated changes in our clients’ financial priorities. In order to preserve capital, my husband and I stopped taking a salary for the last month. When we learned of the CARES Act and associated “Paycheck Protection Program (“PPP”),” we considered it a lifeline that would help keep our company afloat for an additional 10 weeks based on the calculations contained in the PPP application.

Our Congressman Andy Kim really understands and empathizes with small business owners, like myself and my husband. His daily updates during these unprecedented times provide not just much needed information, but also a measure of calm and reassurance. He has, and continues, to work hard to help the small businesses in NJ District 3. I am so grateful to Congressman Kim, a true public servant in every sense of the phrase.
