A letter to the editor by Ciarrai Campbell of Mt. Holly, NJ
The novel coronavirus has a lot of people scared – and with good reason. It is sweeping the world, its death rate is magnitudes higher than the flu, and the spread within the United States is as yet unknown. With Trump aggressively downplaying the risks, Pence controlling all the information coming out of the Centers for Disease Control, and information being pulled from the CDC website, it can be hard to know where to find honest, helpful, realistic information.
Congressman Andy Kim took matters into his own hands to keep his constituents informed. He conference-called healthcare leaders from major hospitals and health departments across Ocean and Burlington Counties to find out their concerns and ask what they needed to combat the virus.
These healthcare leaders stressed the need for clear and consistent communication of safety measures the public can take, as well as when and how people should seek treatment, and the need for more healthcare resource support to prepare for potential spikes in cases.
Congressman Kim was the first in our NJ delegation to convene such a call, as is typical of his proactive style. I am glad my representative is going straight to those who know best — the medical experts. This is no time for fake news or political spin. Kim will continue to listen to our public health officials and pass on vital information directly to his constituents. When Andy Kim first ran for office, he promised to make our health a priority—and he is keeping that promise when we need it most.
