A letter to the editor by Laura Beverage of Medford, NJ
Ms. Gibbs, I read your Commentary in the January 16th issue of the Pine Barrens Tribune, and have some commentary of my own in response. Before you are so quick to endorse the hawkish position you appear to be espousing with respect to Iran, and to denigrate the considered comments of Congressman Kim, perhaps you could benefit from reading up on and learning about the Congressman’s actual, and experience-based, positions regarding the very unstable situation the current POTUS and administration have put into play in the Middle East.
One extremely helpful piece in particular was a Guest Opinion by Kim printed in the Washington Post on January 7th addressing the current threat and entitled, “Brinkmanship Is Not A Strategy”, a piece which reflects the Congressman’s measured, thoughtful and strategic approach in dealing with the escalating threat posed by Iran. Contrary to your claim that he has offered no solutions towards dealing with the current crisis (a crisis, I add, created by the erratic actions of the current POTUS), Kim enumerates several de-escalating steps that can be employed which could serve to reduce the simmering tensions between the two countries.
What specific positions do you propose on how we should be addressing the Mideast conflict, as I see nothing in your brief commentary, other than to incorrectly denigrate Congressman Kim by claiming he does not condemn Soleimani as a terrorist. This is patently untrue. Congressman Kim has made several very public comments about Soleimani being an enemy of the US. It almost seems as if you are deliberately trying to mislead the voters, Ms. Gibbs. This will not be as easy a task as you might think, as voters have become much more savvy in recognizing the extreme partisanship tactics that had been the mainstay in NJ District 3 under prior Republican leadership until Kim’s election.
