OPINION: New Jersey Democrats Tackle Gun Safety

A letter to the editor by Kerry Douglas of Mt. Holly, NJ

My daughter was three years old when the Sandy Hook massacre happened. She had just started her 6th week of school. At age four, she came home and demanded that we find her a safe place to hide in every room of the house in case a “bad man” got inside. She has never known a year without active shooter drills. And I have never known a school day without the gut-level terror that she might not come home.

So it is with great pride and hope that I read a September 4th Burlington County Times article about New Jersey Democrats, including my Congressman Andy Kim, speaking up for gun safety measures — particularly universal background checks. Universal background checks are a gun safety measure that the majority of people—from both parties — agree on. They are not onerous and would not stop any law-abiding citizen from obtaining the weapon they want.

The House has passed background check legislation. Mitch McConnell has stalled in the Senate. Why? Because he is afraid the Senate might pass it, and he refuses to allow the Democrats any semblance of a win. He is a petty man whose vindictiveness places our children at risk every day.

On my daughter’s first day of school this year, she proudly told me, “I figured out where our classroom Code C [active shooter] hiding place is.”

She should be learning her multiplication tables, not how to hide under tables.

We need to do better. Congressman Kim did his job. McConnell needs to do his.
