OPINION: Burlington County Times tone-deaf endorsement

A letter to the editor by Laura Beverage of Medford, NJ

I was truly appalled to see the Burlington County Times endorsement of Tom MacArthur’s re-election in NJ District 3. To say the editorial board is completely tone deaf to the needs and desires of the masses of this district is an incredible understatement. In fact, the endorsement rings hollow to the extent that one must ask whether the BCT is pushing its own agenda here.

I say this because there appears to be no true reasons for this (less than full throated, I might add) endorsement other than that Tom MacArthur isn’t the worst candidate running. You also refer to the “disagreeable tone” and the heated nature of this contest, going so far as to call both campaigns to task for having “…stooped so low.” MacArthur’s campaign has included multiple ethnic and racial slurs about Mr. Kim which have been noted by both Republican and Democratic voters in the district. In contrast, Andy Kim has run a clean, above board, and decidedly positive campaign.

Most revolting of all, one of the bullet points included in your endorsement of Tom MacArthur is “He has a commendable record of bipartisanship; on that score, the nonprofit, nonpartisan Lugar Center has ranked him 31st among 438 representatives.” I would like to point you to a portion of a Letter to the Editor of the BCT, previously penned by this writer and which was run in your September 11th issue, addressing the falsehood of the claim of bipartisanship in an ad run by the MacArthur campaign:

…another piece of Tom MacArthur propaganda stuffed into my mailbox, this one proudly exclaiming that he is “rated one of the most bipartisan members of Congress. Before anyone who’s still on the fence (although I cannot for the life of me fathom how) becomes invested in this claim, you should know that the mailing’s referenced Fact Check, “The Lugar Center & Georgetown University’s McCourt School of Public Policy”, is a think tank founded by former Republican Indiana Senator Richard Lugar. The Washington Examiner, which published in its April 30, 2018 magazine the Lugar Center’s “most bipartisan members of Congress” report. The report states that “9 of the 10 most bipartisan senators in 2017 were Republicans” is in and of itself a paper which became influential in conservative political circles, hiring much of its talent from The Washington Times and replacing the Times as the primary conservative paper in the capital city.

So, I have to ask the obvious question: does anyone at the BCT Editorial Board actually read what it is publishing, or do any fact checking of its own? To say I will not be renewing my subscription to the BCT after this election cycle is over should be imminently obvious.

OPINION: Burlington County Times outrageous endorsement

A letter to the editor by Barbara S. Blonsky of Mount Laurel, NJ

The Burlington County Times has chosen to endorse the current representative of NJCD3. A man who has had protesters lined up in front of his office for two years because of his stands on healthcare. A man fiercely loyal to a party that threatens our social security and Medicare, disregards our need for sensible gun laws, supports the receipt of dark money from corporations to drown out the voices of constituents, demonizes immigrants, threatens the autonomy of women, sees no need for rights to be extended to LGBTQ individuals, and regards brutal, murderous dictators with awe and esteem.

This endorsement is outrageous and infuriating. However, it will not stop me or my thousands of Resister Brothers and Sisters from doing the work that is needed to support and elect our candidates for change.

On a November 6, vote for Andy Kim. Vote for Democrats down the entire line! In every town throughout the county vote blue….for the candidates who listen to you, represent you, and understand you.

We are the change we need. We are the change we want. We will not be silent.
