OPINION: NJ-03’s Tom MacArthur cares more about his A-rating from the NRA than our kids

I have always felt while living in the sleepy NJ town where we chose to make our home, my kids would be safe in school. Watching the news about the most recent school shooting in Florida, along with the epidemic of school shootings our country has already experienced, I heard many people remark that their town was a “safe place to raise a family”. It has made me look at things very differently.

In looking to our leaders, the people who choose to represent us and build the laws for our communities, it is clear that New Jersey’s third Congressional district (NJ3) is in desperate need of a new congressman. Our current congressman co-authored a bill that supported people from other states, states where back ground checks are not required even for people with violent histories, to be able to carry concealed guns in our communities. So a person with a history of domestic violence, who has a conceal carry gun permit from another state, will be legally allowed to carry a concealed gun here in New Jersey. While spending time at our beautiful shore and around families and children, when hiking through some of our scenic NJ hiking trails, or even while eating at a local NJ pizza place.

Our congressman’s plan for keeping our children safe from this insanity is to have more armed guards at schools and high tech surveillance systems. Are these schools or are they prisons? Why is he more interested in supporting unsafe gun legislation and keeping our kids in lockdown rather than standing up to the NRA and gun manufacturers? I have a feeling it has to do with his beloved A-rating from the NRA more than anything.

In reading about his stance on this and his shortsighted plans, it is clear that we need someone better representing those of us in NJ3. We need someone with better ideas about sensible gun legislation regardless of how the NRA chooses to rate him. Willing to stand up for our children and their schools, because he too has young children and lives in our community. Andy Kim has been standing with us, questioning the weak leadership we are currently enduring, working to create a safer environment for our children and our families and has done it without NRA support either in word or in money. I fully support Andy Kim for Congress because he cares a lot less about ratings and a lot more about our communities and the people who actually live in them.
